Proof Without Over-Claiming

Case Notes.

Some clients are named only with permission. Others are anonymised because funder feedback, governance worries and resubmission advice can be sensitive.

North Sheffield

£9,850 For A Warm-Space And Advice Drop-In.

A tenants’ association wanted to keep a winter warm-space open after informal sessions had shown clear demand. The first version had activity costs but almost no evidence of who came, what advice was being requested or how volunteers would manage boundaries.

Ideas Venture Fund rebuilt the project around weekly sessions, volunteer expenses, room hire, referral links and light monitoring. The final application used short evidence from attendance sheets and partner notes, not inflated claims.

Youth CIC

£42,000 Over Two Years For Staffed Weekly Provision.

A small youth CIC had run holiday sessions through favours, borrowed rooms and unpaid admin. The funding problem was not enthusiasm. It was the jump from ad hoc activity to a safe weekly programme.

The bid set out staffing, supervision, safeguarding training, venue costs and a delivery rhythm that trustees could actually oversee. It moved the application away from “we need help” and towards “this is the operating model”.

Resubmission

An Unsuccessful Bid That Became Fundable.

The first application had been declined with brief feedback: unclear outcomes, weak budget and no convincing evidence that the project would reach the intended residents.

Helen advised the group not to resubmit immediately. The budget was rebuilt, partner letters were made specific, and the outcomes were reduced to things the group could monitor. The later resubmission succeeded because it was a different bid, not the same bid with warmer adjectives.

“Sometimes the honest job is telling a group not to apply yet.”
