What Gets Funded

Useful Work Needs More Than A Good Intention.

Most groups arrive with a sensible idea: a warm-space session, youth work that has outgrown favours, advice work that is already carrying too much, or a village hall project that everyone can see is needed. The funder still needs a structured argument.

Before writing begins, Helen tests whether the project has a clear beneficiary group, a named decision-maker, a budget that can be evidenced, a safeguarding position that can be explained, and documents that match the funder’s rules. That is where a bid stops being hopeful and starts being fundable.

“A grant application is not a magic door. It is a structured argument for useful work.”

The Three Jobs

Find The Right Fund, Shape The Project, Write The Application.

01

Find The Right Fund

Eligibility is checked before anyone spends money on writing. That includes geography, legal structure, account age, reserves, match funding and deadline pressure.

02

Shape The Project

The activity, costs, outcomes and delivery timetable are tightened until a trustee, funder and volunteer can all understand the same plan.

03

Write The Application

The bid is drafted in plain English, checked against the funder’s scoring logic, and handed over with the pieces your committee needs to approve.

Local Knowledge

A Sheffield Desk With A Marked-Up Boundary Map.

Ideas Venture Fund was started in Sheffield in 2013 by Helen Rourke, after several years managing community arts, youth and neighbourhood renewal projects across South Yorkshire.

Ideas Venture Fund works mainly across Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Chesterfield and the Hope Valley, with remote work available across the UK for established charities and CICs.

Helen keeps a printed South Yorkshire and Derbyshire parish-boundary map, marked with bus routes, beside the desk. Small rural funds often use eligibility lines that do not match how local people describe where they live, and those lines still catch people out.
